Cosmetic dentistry is a blanket term to cover a group of dental procedures that improve the look of your teeth and your smile. But despite the term “cosmetic,” many cosmetic dentistry services are critical to protecting your teeth and maintaining a comfortable bite. Cosmetic Dentistry: Teeth Whitening to Improve Your Smile, and Appearance of Your Teeth

Professional teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services we offer at Midland Bay Dental. It’s one of the few services that are truly cosmetic – the goal is to improve the look of your teeth, ensuring your teeth are an even, white shade. It’s important to note, however, that whiter teeth are not necessarily healthier teeth.

Teeth whitening is not without its health benefits, however. Many people are self-conscious about their teeth and hide them when they smile. They may be distracted in Zoom meetings or cover their teeth when they laugh because their teeth are stained or yellowed.

Teeth whitening can provide the confidence to smile and present your whole self when you’re laughing with friends, smiling for the camera, or talking to a client. The psychological benefits of smiling and laughter are many, and teeth whitening treatments can help.

Crowns, Dental Crowns, and Bridges

Dental Crowns and Bridges and Crowns are other popular cosmetic dentistry services.

Crowns are “caps” slotted over your teeth to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. Crowns are used to fix cracks in teeth, advanced tooth decay, or perhaps a large filling. During a crown procedure, the damaged tooth is filed down, and a hollow artificial tooth is created and slotted over the top, affixed in place with dental cement. The crown looks and feels like a natural tooth, and you care for it exactly the same – with regular flossing, brushing, and dental checkups.

A crown and bridge are a different procedures. A crown and bridge are used to replace one or more missing teeth. The procedure involves making an artificial tooth or teeth to cover the gap created by the missing teeth, with two crowns at the end – all in one piece. The “crown and bridge” is then placed over the gap, with the dental crowns placed over two healthy teeth on either side of the gap, to hold the “bridge” in place.

A crown and bridge look like natural teeth when you smile. The crowns and artificial teeth are created to match your natural tooth colour, and you eat and drink with them just like your natural teeth. The only difference is how you care for a crown and bridge. Because they are fused as a single unit, you cannot floss between the teeth. Your dentist will teach you how to properly care for your crown and bridge to keep the rest of your teeth and gums healthy.
