Here’s What to Expect When You Schedule a Veneer Procedure

Veneer Procedure

If you’re looking to enhance your smile with a complete smile transformation or improve the appearance of just a few teeth, a veneer procedure might be the treatment for you! This minimally invasive procedure can help improve many cosmetic concerns such as discoloration, poor alignment or chips.  In many ways, dental veneers can improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.

What are Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin white shells that bond to the front of the tooth’s surface. They are often referred to as “porcelain veneers” as a result of their composition. Veneers can also consist of resin composite materials. Veneers bond to your natural tooth, so they do not replace missing teeth but they can rehabilitate decaying teeth.

While some people have veneers placed on all of their teeth, that is not always required. Usually, an even number of teeth treated with veneers provides a good outcome. During your initial consultation with our team at Midland Bay Dental, expectations for the procedure will be established.

What to Expect

First, an exam will determine whether you’re a good candidate for dental veneers. Also at this time, you can discuss your expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. The consultation is your opportunity to ask how many dental veneers you might need. To ensure that dental veneers are right for you, we may take some x-rays and make impressions of both your mouth and teeth.

Next, we will need to reshape the surface of the teeth requiring veneers. Impressions of the reshaped teeth are taken to ensure that the customized veneer shell can accurately be bonded to your tooth. You leave with a temporary covering on your teeth that simulate the veneers.

Procedure for Bonding Veneers

Usually, after a week or two, you will return to the clinic for the final set. To ensure that the veneer sizing is correct and the colour matches, we will test the veneer before bonding it to your tooth’s surface.

Before applying the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned professionally in preparation for the bonding process. A grinding tool is also used on your tooth to create a rough texture to help support the bonding.

A cement seal is added to the veneer and then applied to the surface of your tooth. Next, light can be used on your tooth to expedite the hardening process. Any excess cement will be removed and your bite will be examined.
